Ostoja Augustowska

Ostoja Augustowska is a large Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance in northeastern Poland, situated entirely within Podlaskie Voivodeship near the borders with Lithuania and Belarus. Designated in 2009 by the European Commission, it spans roughly 107,068 hectares across the Augustów Plain and the northern fringes of the Biebrza Basin, forming part of the broader Augustów Primeval Forest (Puszcza Augustowska). The site is defined by extensive, largely continuous tracts of coniferous forest, dominated by pine and spruce, interspersed with raised bogs, transitional mires, alkaline fens, dystrophic lakes, and riparian wetland forests. Around 3.75 percent of its territory consists of nature reserves, and a large share overlaps with the Puszcza Augustowska Special Protection Area for birds. Ostoja Augustowska is ecologically significant both as a refuge for threatened European mammals and as a major ecological corridor linking the forest ecosystems of Central and Eastern Europe. Its combination of old-growth stands, peatland systems, and rare plant occurrences places it among the most important protected forest landscapes in the Polish lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
