Rara National Park

Rara National Park is a protected area in the Himalayas of Nepal, established in 1976 to safeguard the unique flora and fauna of the Humla-Jumla Region. Covering 106 square kilometers across the Mugu and Jumla districts, it stands as Nepal's smallest national park. The park's centerpiece is Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, situated at an altitude of 2,990 meters. This oval-shaped alpine freshwater lake spans 10.8 square kilometers and reaches a maximum depth of 167 meters, surrounded by towering peaks including Chuchemara Peak at 4,039 meters on the southern side and the Ruma Kand and Malika Kand ranges to the north. The protected area encompasses a dramatic altitudinal range from 2,800 meters to 4,039 meters, creating diverse ecological zones that support both temperate and subalpine vegetation communities. Managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation with Nepal Army assistance, the park represents a critical conservation stronghold in remote western Nepal.
