Reserva Biológica de la Cordillera de Sama

Reserva Biológica de la Cordillera de Sama is a protected area in the western Tarija Department of southern Bolivia, covering around 108,500 hectares of the eastern Andes and their transition into highland valleys. The reserve spans the Cordillera de Sama, forming one of the older mountain systems of the Bolivian Andes and acting as the geographic boundary between the Puna highlands and the lower Tarija valleys. The reserve protects a striking altitude gradient, from roughly 1,950 meters in the dry inter-Andean valleys to more than 4,700 meters on the high cordillera. Within this range it shelters puna grasslands, highland wetlands such as the endorheic Tajzara basin, relict Polylepis woodlands, patches of Tucumano-Bolivian montane forest, and archaeological heritage linked to pre-Columbian indigenous pathways. Created in 1991, the reserve is administered by Bolivia's Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas. It is recognized for the conservation of vulnerable Andean wildlife, including Andean flamingos and other highland waterbirds, the Andean cat, vicuña, and several endemic rodent species, while also supplying water that drains to the city of Tarija.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
