Gorges de Daluis Regional Nature Reserve

The Gorges de Daluis Regional Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Centered mainly on the commune of Guillaumes, with extensions onto Daluis, the reserve safeguards a striking canyon system cut by the Var River through vivid red-purple rock. The defining feature of the site is its deep gorge carved into Permian pelites, a fine-grained sedimentary rock whose rusty coloration gives the landscape an almost desert-like appearance unique in the Alpes-Maritimes. Walls rise several hundred meters above the river, and the combination of geological drama and Mediterranean mountain setting has earned the gorge the nickname "Colorado niçois." Beyond its scenery, the reserve protects a remarkably diverse range of habitats across altitude and rock type, supporting rare plants, nesting raptors, an important community of cave-dwelling bats, and several endemic invertebrates. Established in 2012, it represents one of the more recent additions to France's network of regional nature reserves and is now jointly managed by the local intermunicipal authority and the regional branch of the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
