Réserve naturelle régionale du bassin de la Bièvre

The Réserve naturelle régionale du bassin de la Bièvre is a small regional nature reserve in the Île-de-France region of north-central France. Classed on 9 July 2009, it protects a former stormwater retention basin along the historic course of the Bièvre river, a former Seine tributary. Occupying roughly six hectares across the communes of Antony and Verrières-le-Buisson, in the Essonne and Hauts-de-Seine departments, it represents one of the rare surviving wetland pockets in an otherwise heavily urbanized southern Parisian periphery. Its ecological profile is dominated by reedbeds, willow thickets, open water, and seasonally exposed muddy banks, a mosaic of habitats that supports a surprisingly rich fauna and flora for such a compact site. The reserve is jointly managed by the SIAAP, the Parisian interdepartmental sanitation authority that owns the basin infrastructure, and the Centre Ornithologique Île-de-France, a regional bird association that brings ornithological expertise to its conservation and monitoring. Its creation followed decades of incremental recognition, first as a ZNIEFF in 1984, then as a departmental Espace Naturel Sensible, before reaching regional nature reserve status. What sets the reserve apart is its position at the intersection of urban hydrology and biodiversity. It demonstrates how an engineered flood-control basin can evolve into a functioning wetland ecosystem, providing refuge for migratory and wintering wetland birds in a metropolitan region where such habitats have become exceptional. The site is also designed for public discovery, with a discovery trail, observation points, and a recently redesigned bird hide that allow visitors to engage with the reserve without disturbing its core wildlife areas.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
