Sugry Nature Reserve (Janusz Szostakiewicz Memorial)

The „Sugry" Nature Reserve is a small forest reserve in eastern Poland, located in the commune of Kodeń in Lublin Voivodeship, near the Bug River and the border with Belarus. It protects a stand of dry continental pine woodland known as reindeer-lichen pine forest, a habitat type that has become rare across Polish lowlands. The reserve was established in 2021 on an area of roughly 44 hectares, with an additional protective buffer zone. It is named after the historic village of Suhre, which once stood in the area, and after Janusz Szostakiewicz, a regional nature conservator who played a founding role in major cross-border protected areas along the Bug. Its main significance lies in the exceptional richness of its lichen flora, which developed naturally over decades on former agricultural land abandoned after World War II. The reserve also forms part of a broader network of international and European protected areas, including a transboundary biosphere reserve and a Special Protection Area for birds along the middle Bug.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
