San Patricio State Forest

San Patricio State Forest is one of twenty protected forests in the public forest system of Puerto Rico, and the smallest of them all, covering roughly 70 cuerdas (about 68 acres) within the city of San Juan. Despite its modest size, the forest plays an outsized role as a green refuge inside the metropolitan area, sitting between the Villa Borinquen, Caparra Heights, and Borinquen Towers neighborhoods in the Gobernador Piñero district. The forest is a secondary subtropical moist forest classified within the broader Puerto Rican moist forests ecoregion, and it forms part of the Northern Karst belt that runs across the northern part of the island. Its defining landscape feature is a lone mogote, the residual tower of limestone left standing after two earlier karst hills were quarried away during mid-century urban development. That surviving mogote, along with raised limestone terrain inside the forest, supports native plant communities in an otherwise largely exotic regrowth. San Patricio is also notable for what it represents as a conservation story: a patch of land cleared for housing that was reclaimed by forest, then legally proclaimed and placed under the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources in 2000. Today it functions as a place for recreation, environmental education, scientific research, and birdwatching within a dense urban setting.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
