Steinbruch Holzmühle

Steinbruch Holzmühle is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in Lower Saxony, Germany, located southwest of the Eldagsen district of the town of Springe in the Region Hannover. The protected area covers about nine hectares within the western Osterwald hill range, immediately adjacent to the well-known Saupark Springe reserve. Its core feature is a disused limestone quarry whose exposed rock face provides a rare open geological profile of the Kimmeridgian stage, including the coral-bearing Korallenoolith formation, alongside scree slopes, loose limestone blocks, and small temporary pools that support threatened amphibians. Beyond its geological significance, the reserve functions as a managed habitat and species protection area (IUCN Category IV), where artificial earth banks shield fragile amphibian breeding waters from disturbance. Designated in December 1985 and administered by the Region Hannover under the oversight of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Defense and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), Steinbruch Holzmühle demonstrates how a once-industrial extraction site can transition into a refuge for both paleontological study and biodiversity conservation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
