A vast Natura 2000 forest complex linking raised bogs, mixed woodlands, and rich lowland wildlife in eastern Poland.

Uroczyska Lasów Janowskich

Uroczyska Lasów Janowskich (PLH060031) is a large Natura 2000 protected area in eastern Poland, covering about 34,544 hectares of forest and associated wetland habitat within the broader Janów and Lipsko forest complexes. It straddles the border between Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, occupying parts of the Biłgoraj Plain and the lower San River valley, a lowland setting where peatlands, riverine corridors, and mixed woodlands meet. What makes the site stand out is its exceptional habitat diversity for a Polish lowland context. Twenty-one habitat types listed under the European Union Habitats Directive are present, ranging from mature oak-hornbeam forests and rare upland fir mixed forest to active raised bogs and transitional mires. This juxtaposition of dry mineral soils with actively forming peatlands within a single contiguous block is unusual and gives the area a layered ecological identity. The protection framework surrounding the site is equally distinctive. Six nature reserves are nested within its boundaries, and roughly 72 percent of its area overlaps the Lasy Janowskie Landscape Park, meaning that EU-level, national-level, and reserve-level safeguards reinforce one another across most of the territory.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
