Alerce Costero National Park

Alerce Costero National Park is a protected area in southern Chile situated within the Cordillera Pelada, a mountainous region of the Chilean Coast Range in the Los Ríos Region. The park is located approximately 137 kilometers from Valdivia and 49 kilometers from La Unión commune, encompassing a total area of 137 square kilometers. The park's defining feature is the ancient Fitzroya trees (Fitzroya cupressoides), a species of conifer that can live for thousands of years, from which the park derives its name meaning Coastal Fitzroya. Established originally as a National Monument in 1987, the area was elevated to national park status in 2010 through a collaboration between the Chilean government and The Nature Conservancy, which contributed adjacent land holdings including the former Valdivia National Reserve and Quitaluto estate. The park protects a significant portion of the Valudivian temperate rain forest, one of the world's rarest forest ecosystems, and serves as a critical watershed area for the Chaihuín river basin.
