Altyn Dala Nature Reserve

Altyn Dala Nature Reserve is a large state nature reserve in the Kostanay Region of northern Kazakhstan, established in 2012 to protect the habitats, breeding grounds, and migration routes of the Betpak-Dala population of saiga antelope. The reserve covers roughly 489,766 hectares and is organized into three cluster sections: the Sarykopa lake system, the Tosynkum sand massif along the Turgay River, and the vast Uly-Zhylyanshyk semi-desert steppe along the Uly-Zhylyanshyk River. The landscape of the reserve lies on a gently flattening plain, with elevations rising gradually from around 120 to 200 meters in the western parts to roughly 200 to 300 meters as the terrain stretches eastward toward the meridional river segments of Karatorgay and Uly-Zhylyanshyk. Steppes, semi-deserts, and desert habitats together with floodplain meadows and wetlands form the ecological backbone of the protected area. Approximately 400,000 hectares of the reserve consist of steppe and semi-desert landscapes. Altyn Dala functions as both a conservation stronghold and a living laboratory for steppe ecosystem recovery, including the ongoing reintroduction of the Asiatic wild ass, the kulan. The reserve is managed by the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, and its territory incorporates the former Sarykopa zakaznik, a site that earlier figured prominently in Kazakhstan's UNESCO World Heritage nomination process for the Saryarka steppes and lakes of northern Kazakhstan.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
