Belize's largest national park spanning pristine Maya Mountains forest and the Caracol archaeological zone
Chiquibul National Park
Chiquibul National Park is Belize's largest protected area, encompassing over 1,000 square kilometers of tropical forest in the Cayo District of western Belize. The park occupies a dramatic landscape at the eastern edge of the Maya Mountains, where Doyle's Delight, Belize's highest peak, rises above surrounding ridges and valleys. This vast wilderness area lies adjacent to the Guatemalan border and surrounds the ancient Mayan city of Caracol, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region. The park was established in 1995 after emerging from the older Chiquibul Forest Reserve, which had been protected since 1956. What makes Chiquibul particularly remarkable is its largely unbroken forest cover, which has persisted since the Maya civilization declined centuries ago, creating one of Central America's most ecologically intact lowland tropical environments.
