Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area off the coast of California, situated roughly fifty miles northwest of San Francisco. The sanctuary protects an underwater granite seamount that rises from the soft sediments of the continental shelf, with its upper pinnacles reaching to within about 115 feet of the ocean surface before dropping away into far deeper water on all sides. This unusual combination of shallow, light-penetrable substrate surrounded by deep ocean creates conditions that concentrate marine life far beyond what would be expected at such a remote offshore location. The sanctuary is known internationally as a productive feeding ground for endangered whales, a vital foraging area for seabirds ranging from shearwaters to rare albatrosses, and a refuge for more than two hundred species of fish, including a remarkable diversity of rockfish. Cool, nutrient-rich waters brought up by the California Current sustain blooms of phytoplankton and krill that ripple outward through the food web, drawing in marine mammals, seabirds, and fisheries species from across the Pacific. As one of thirteen components of the United States National Marine Sanctuary System, Cordell Bank is managed by NOAA to preserve the biological integrity of a place where deep ocean, continental shelf, and migratory species converge. Its protection is intended not only to safeguard the bank itself, but to maintain the broader ecological connections between coastal California, the open Pacific, and the species that move across this stretch of ocean.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
