A Big Five wildlife reserve in Gauteng, South Africa, where rivers meet bushveld and savanna.

Dinokeng Game Reserve

Dinokeng Game Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary in the northeastern part of Gauteng, South Africa, situated near Hammanskraal and within easy reach of Pretoria and Johannesburg. The reserve is part of a broader Dinokeng region that blends conservation with tourism, agricultural landscapes, and communities surrounding the protected area. The name Dinokeng is drawn from the Tswana and Bapedi languages and translates roughly as "a place of rivers," reflecting the central role of watercourses such as the Pienaars River in shaping the landscape. Established in 2011 through a public-private partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government and more than 170 private landowners, Dinokeng was conceived as an ecotourism initiative aimed at boosting employment and rural development in a historically underserved part of the province. Big Five game animals were gradually reintroduced over the reserves first decade, with the full suite of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros present by 2018. Today Dinokeng stands out as the closest Big Five reserve to South Africas two largest urban centers, offering visitors self-drive routes through a mosaic of sweet-veld and sour-veld grasslands, riverine thickets, and scattered dams. Its accessibility and combination of mammal-rich savanna with strong birdlife have made it both a regional recreation hub and a working example of how conservation, tourism, and rural livelihoods can be linked on a relatively small land parcel.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
