El Cimatario National Park

El Cimatario National Park is a protected natural area in central Mexico, located in Querétaro state just south of the city of Santiago de Querétaro. The park encompasses Cerro del Cimatario, a dormant volcanic mountain rising to approximately 2,400 meters elevation, which serves as a prominent landmark visible from much of the metropolitan area. Established as a national park in 1982, the 24.48 square kilometer preserve protects representative ecosystems of the Bajío dry forests and Central Mexican matorral ecoregions, sheltering more than 690 documented species of plants and animals. The volcanic soils, derived from Pliocene eruptions and characterized by the distinctive red porous tezontle rock, support a diverse vegetation mosaic ranging from cactus scrub in lower elevations to tropical dry forest in sheltered canyons. The park holds significant cultural importance, with archaeological evidence of human occupation dating back to 350 BCE, and derives its name from the Chichimeca-jonaz language meaning "male coyote."

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
