Emigrant Wilderness

Emigrant Wilderness is a formally designated wilderness area within the Stanislaus National Forest in the central Sierra Nevada of California. Lying entirely within Tuolumne County, it stretches in an elongated band roughly 25 miles long and up to 15 miles wide, bordered by Yosemite National Park to the south, the Hoover Wilderness and Toiyabe National Forest to the east, and Sonora Pass to the north. The landscape reflects the shaping power of glaciers, with a mix of sparsely vegetated granitic ridges, high mountain meadows, and hundreds of lakes spread across basins that drain to the Stanislaus and Tuolumne Rivers. The northeastern third of the wilderness is dominated by volcanic ridges and peaks formed from ancient lava flows, while the remainder is characterized by granitic terrain sculpted by Pleistocene glaciation. Elevations span from below 5,000 feet near Cherry Reservoir to 11,570 feet at Leavitt Peak, with most popular areas sitting between 7,500 and 9,000 feet. The climate is strongly seasonal, with deep winter snowpacks, dry and mild summers, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms during the warmer months. Emigrant Wilderness holds both ecological and historical importance. It protects representative Sierra Nevada high country habitat and preserves traces of the routes taken by nineteenth century emigrant parties crossing the Sierra. Designated as the Emigrant Basin Primitive Area in 1931 and redesignated as wilderness in 1975 under the National Wilderness Preservation System, it remains a major destination for backpacking, horseback riding, and Pacific Crest Trail travelers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
