Fuldaschleuse Wolfsanger

Fuldaschleuse Wolfsanger is a small nature reserve and European Habitats Directive (FFH) site located in the eastern part of the city of Kassel, in the German state of Hesse. Covering roughly 14 hectares, it protects a stretch of the left-bank floodplain of the River Fulda at the site of the former Wolfsanger lock, where river management works once eliminated valuable wetland habitats. The area was upgraded in the 1980s as a compensatory measure for floodplain losses caused by the construction of the Wahnhausen weir, which went into operation in April 1980. New shallow-water zones, an island, and a peninsula were created, and the site quickly developed into a stopover for migratory waterbirds. Today it functions simultaneously as a nature reserve, an FFH area, and a component of the larger EU bird protection area known as the Fuldaaue um Kassel. Ecologically, the reserve is defined by softwater floodplain forest, tall herb communities, damp grasslands, and artificial shallow-water areas that together support amphibians, reptiles, dragonflies, butterflies, and around 120 recorded bird species. Its compact size and urban-edge location make it an unusual example of a habitat-focused, species-rich floodplain reserve embedded within a major German city.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
