Galiuro Wilderness

Galiuro Wilderness is a roughly 76,000-acre federally designated wilderness area in Graham County, southeastern Arizona, managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Coronado National Forest. It encompasses the mid to upper slopes of the Galiuro Mountains, one of the state's classic block-fault ranges, where uplift and erosion have produced steep, brushy ridgelines, deeply incised canyons, and brightly colored exposures of rock and soil. The wilderness straddles a transitional landscape where semi-desert grasslands give way to Madrean woodland, mixed conifer forest, and isolated riparian pockets along spring-fed canyon bottoms. Elevations climb from about 4,000 feet at the lower flanks to more than 7,600 feet at the summit of Bassett Peak, creating strong habitat layering across the range. Galiuro Wilderness is also notable for its human story. It preserves sites connected to early homesteading and mining, the dramatic Power Brothers Shootout of 1918, and a World War II B-24 bomber crash near Bassett Peak, all set within a landscape shaped by Apache-era and later ranching history.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
