Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is a vast, non-contiguous protected landscape surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Managed by the U.S. National Park Service, it encompasses over 82,000 acres of ecologically and historically significant terrain stretching from southern San Mateo County through the West Side of San Francisco and up into Marin County. The GGNRA is distinctive among American protected areas: rather than forming a single continuous park, it links together a remarkable mosaic of coastal cliffs, beaches, redwood forests, former military installations, historic fortifications, and urban parklands. Established in 1972 largely on land formerly held by the United States Army, the GGNRA has grown into one of the largest urban parks in the world and one of the most heavily visited units of the entire U.S. National Park System. Within its boundaries lie world-famous landmarks including Muir Woods National Monument, Alcatraz Island, the Presidio of San Francisco, and the Marin Headlands, alongside 59 miles of bay and ocean shoreline. The recreation area preserves both the natural character of the northern California coast and a layered military and cultural history spanning from Spanish colonial explorations through the Cold War era.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
