Grebo-Krahn National Park

Grebo-Krahn National Park is a large protected rainforest in southeastern Liberia, straddling Grand Gedeh County and River Gee County near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. The park safeguards a major block of Upper Guinean forest, an ecosystem that has been heavily reduced elsewhere in West Africa. With forest cover of over 99%, the reserve preserves an essentially intact canopy that supports chimpanzees, Diana monkeys, king colobus, pygmy hippopotamus, and giant pangolins, alongside hundreds of other animal and plant species. Established in October 2017 and administered by Liberia's Forestry Development Authority, the park represents one of the country's most significant recent conservation achievements. It has been recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for its populations of forest-dependent birds, and conservation organizations including Conservation International Liberia have worked in the broader Grebo forest landscape to support its protection. At its official land area, Grebo-Krahn is among the largest national parks in Liberia, and its combined maximum forest extent places it among the more substantial continuous forest reserves remaining in the Upper Guinea region. The park stands out as a refuge for species that have disappeared from much of their former range, giving it strong regional and continental conservation value.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
