Hawea (Clio Rocks) Marine Reserve

Hawea (Clio Rocks) Marine Reserve is a small but ecologically distinctive marine protected area covering 411 hectares in Hāwea / Bligh Sound, one of the steep-walled fiords of Fiordland on New Zealand's South Island. Established in 2005 and administered by the Department of Conservation, the reserve sits within one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the Southern Hemisphere, where glacially carved valleys meet the Tasman Sea. The reserve's defining character comes from the unusual water column of Fiordland's fiords. Heavy rainfall from the surrounding mountains creates a permanent freshwater layer near the surface, beneath which lies a band of clear, calm, warmer seawater that supports rich communities of sponges, corals, and fish. Below that, a darker tannin-stained layer extends to considerable depth. This unusual stratification shapes where marine life thrives, and the reserve protects both deep basin habitat and steep, near-vertical rock walls where black corals and other sensitive species concentrate. Hawea is best known for the almost vertical rock walls at Turn Round Point, where abundant reef fish and invertebrates feed on plankton swept through during high tides, attracting larger predators and fur seals. The reserve also reflects the long-standing cultural connection of Kāti Hāwea to the fiord and recognizes Ngāi Tahu rights around pounamu collection, giving the site both marine conservation value and cultural significance.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
