Iluka Nature Reserve

Iluka Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically significant protected nature reserve on the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Located near the town of Iluka in the Northern Rivers region, the reserve protects a remnant of littoral rainforest that is among the last surviving stands of this vegetation type in the Southern Hemisphere. The reserve is part of the broader Coastal group of the Gondwana Rainforests, a UNESCO World Heritage inscription that recognizes the global botanical significance of ancient rainforest lineages in eastern Australia. Since being added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2007, Iluka has been formally recognized as a nationally important site for both its rainforest values and its coastal setting. Despite its modest size, the reserve contains a surprising range of plant communities, shifting from coastal dune vegetation on the seaward edge to dense subtropical rainforest in more sheltered areas. This combination of coastal and rainforest habitats supports a wide variety of native animals, including marsupials and a notable bird population of more than 140 recorded species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
