Inyo National Forest

Inyo National Forest is a massive United States National Forest that runs along the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada in California and extends into the White Mountains of California and Nevada. Encompassing much of the Owens Valley, the forest is a landscape of superlatives: it contains Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, as well as Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, which protects the oldest known living trees on Earth. The forest spans an enormous elevation range, from the arid floor of the Owens Valley up to alpine ridges above 14,000 feet. Its eastern boundary is defined by the rain shadow of the Sierra, giving Inyo a notably sparse timberline and the reputation as one of the least wooded forests in the national forest system. Despite that, it shelters roughly 238,000 acres of old-growth forest, alongside nine designated wilderness areas that tie it into a continuous corridor of protected high country stretching from Yosemite to Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service and headquartered in Bishop, California, Inyo functions as both a working landscape and a gateway to some of the most iconic natural features in the American West, from glacier-carved canyons and volcanic craters to the ancient bristlecone groves of the White Mountains.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
