Kargalinsky Zakaznik

Kargalinsky Zakaznik is a state-level zoological reserve (zakaznik) in central Kazakhstan, set up in 1970 to protect rare animals. It lies in the Kyzylorda Region, spanning parts of the Shieli and Zhanakorgan districts along the Syr Darya river. The territory occupies a narrow strip of the river's floodplain, roughly seven kilometers wide and twenty kilometers long, where dense riparian thickets, meadows, and pasture lands form a refuge for wildlife in an otherwise dry landscape. The reserve's defining ecological value comes from its mix of floodplain and steppe habitats. Dense thickets of Russian olive, chingil, and willow line the river, while tamarisk stands dominate the areas beyond the floodplain. This combination of dense cover, meadows, and open pasture supports wild boar, badgers, tolai hares, foxes, and occasional wolves and saiga antelope, and provides habitat for waterfowl such as geese, ducks, and coots. Kargalinsky Zakaznik is best known for its role in protecting the Syr Darya pheasant, a valuable game bird whose populations depend on the dense brushy thickets of this river corridor. The reserve represents one of the small but strategically placed protected areas along the Syr Darya, where conservation of floodplain wildlife intersects with traditional pastoral land use.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
