Kwajalein Atoll

Kwajalein Atoll is part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and is one of the largest coral atolls in the world, enclosing a vast lagoon and comprising dozens of small islands and islets in the western Ralik Chain. The atoll sits roughly 2,100 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu in the northern Pacific, on the edge of Micronesia, and is framed by low islands whose average elevation is barely above sea level. Beyond its striking marine geography, Kwajalein is defined by its layered history. It has long been a culturally important site for the Marshallese, was charted by early Spanish explorers, came under German and then Japanese administration, and was the scene of a major World War II battle. Today the atoll is best known as the heart of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site, hosting radar installations, missile launch complexes, space tracking assets, and a large U.S. military community alongside the densely inhabited Marshallese island of Ebeye. The combination of a sheltered tropical lagoon ecosystem, an interconnected chain of inhabited islets, and decades of military and aerospace activity gives Kwajalein a distinctive identity among the world's atolls, blending traditional Micronesian life with a high-tech Pacific defense and space-test presence.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
