Liuwa Plain National Park

Liuwa Plain National Park is a vast protected wilderness in Zambia's Western Province, covering approximately 3,369 square kilometers of grassland within the Barotse Floodplain system. The park derives its name from the local Liuwa language, where "liuwa" means plain, reflecting the sweeping savanna landscapes that define this remote region. Originally established as a hunting ground for Lubosi Lewanika, the Litunga (king) of the Lozi people in the early 1880s, the area was formally designated as a national park in 1972. The park is bounded by the Luambimba River to the north and the Luanginga River to the south, featuring a distinctive flat grassland terrain approximately 72 by 32 kilometers in extent, punctuated by scattered raffia palms and woodland patches. Today, the park is managed by African Parks in partnership with Zambia's Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Barotse Royal Establishment, representing a successful model of collaborative conservation in southern Africa.
