Lostwood Wilderness

Lostwood Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in northwestern North Dakota, situated within Burke County and embedded inside the larger Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge. Established by Congress in 1975, it represents one of the state's compact but ecologically meaningful contributions to the National Wilderness Preservation System. The area is part of the broader prairie pothole region, a landscape shaped by glaciation and known for its mosaic of shallow wetlands, native grasslands, and small lakes. This setting gives Lostwood Wilderness much of its character, and explains why it was protected in the first place: the surrounding refuge complex is recognized as one of the most important duck and waterfowl breeding regions in all of North America. Although small in size, Lostwood Wilderness plays a significant role in maintaining an undeveloped, road-free landscape within a much larger managed wildlife refuge. It preserves an example of northern mixed-grass prairie and associated wetland habitats in a state where most native prairie has long been converted to agriculture.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
