Malý Kosatín

Malý Kosatín is a small natural monument (přírodní památka) in the Písek District of the South Bohemian Region in the Czech Republic, set in the wooded hill country northwest of the village of Boudy. The protected site centers on a species-rich wet meadow, sloping gently to the south, that has been maintained by regular mowing for generations. It lies at the foot of two named hills, Velký Kosatín and Malý Kosatín, and forms a green pocket amid surrounding forest and agricultural land. The meadow is notable for its extraordinarily dense population of the May orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis), with up to around four hundred individuals recorded, alongside tens of individuals of the strongly threatened marsh grass-of-Parnassus (Parnassia palustris). Around ninety percent of the site is covered by vegetation of the Calthion alliance, a classic fen-meadow community type rich in sedges, cotton grasses, and colorful wildflowers, mixed with elements of Caricion fuscae and Molinion communities. Beyond its botanical importance, Malý Kosatín has cultural and educational value through its position near the Alšova naučná stezka educational trail between Mirotice and Čimelice, and through its proximity to the geologically interesting Kosatínský viklan erratic boulder. Although the area itself is not openly accessible, it forms an important stop in the wider story of the Bohemian countryside and its traditional grassland management.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
