Marmaris National Park

Marmaris National Park is a protected coastal wilderness area situated along the southwestern coast of Turkey in Muğla Province, encompassing the scenic region between the towns of Marmaris and Köyceğiz. Established on 30 January 1996 through a cabinet decision published in the Official Gazette of Turkey, the park covers approximately 33,350 hectares of rugged Mediterranean terrain characterized by pine forests, deep valleys, and dramatic coastlines. The park holds significant ecological importance as part of the World Wildlife Fund's Mediterranean Forests ecoregion, representing one of 200 globally priority ecological regions. Its biodiversity is remarkable, with over 500 plant species documented, including 54 endemic varieties, and a diverse fauna encompassing mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. The region carries deep historical significance as ancient Caria, with archaeological sites including the ancient cities of Amos and Physcus featuring Hellenistic-era fortifications and a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. The park receives substantial visitation, with approximately 8.5 million visitors in 2021, drawn to its combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and cultural heritage.
