Mili Atoll

Mili Atoll is a coral atoll in the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands, lying in the central Pacific Ocean roughly 78 kilometers southeast of Arno Atoll. It is the second-largest atoll in the country by land area, comprising 92 individual islets that enclose a large but mostly open lagoon of around 760 square kilometers. The atoll's economy and daily life revolve around the main village of Mili, with several smaller villages such as Nallu, Enejet, Lukonor, Tokewa, and Wau spread across adjacent islets. Although Mili is a quiet, low-lying island community today, it carries a heavy historical footprint. The atoll was claimed by the German Empire in 1885, fell under the Japanese South Seas Mandate after World War I, and was heavily fortified during World War II, when it hosted runways, coastal defenses, and a multi-thousand-strong garrison. After the war it became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands before joining the independent Republic of the Marshall Islands in 1986. Its wartime relics, surrounding reef ecosystems, and remote Pacific setting together give Mili Atoll its distinct character.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
