Mount Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary

Mount Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest protected natural areas in the Philippines. It sits in the northwestern part of Mindoro, the country's seventh-largest island, within the province of Occidental Mindoro and near the coastal town of Paluan. The sanctuary covers a substantial tract of mountainous terrain dominated by Mount Calavite, the highest peak in the range, and preserves a remnant of the lowland rainforests that once extended all the way to the coast. Beyond its long history under state protection, the sanctuary is ecologically important because it houses several bird species found nowhere else on Earth, as well as habitat for the Tamaraw, a critically endangered buffalo that is Mindoro's signature large mammal. It functions both as a refuge for endemic wildlife and as a living reminder of how much of Mindoro's original forest cover has been altered by agricultural expansion. As a protected area it has a dual character: a highland core of rugged peaks and old metamorphic rock, and a surrounding matrix of recovering and partially cleared rainforest and grassland that still supports significant biodiversity. It is part of the broader MIMAROPA network of sanctuaries and parks that together protect Mindoro's biological heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
