A small sun-warmed sandstone reserve on the Haardt edge of the Palatinate Forest

Naturschutzgebiet Am Wolfsberg

Naturschutzgebiet Am Wolfsberg is a very small nature reserve of about three hectares on the western edge of the Haardt range, the eastern massif of the Palatinate Forest, above the Speyerbach valley near Neustadt an der Weinstraße in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It protects a steep, south-west-facing slope crossed by ancient quarry workings, where a Zechstein limestone layer is overlain by Lower and Middle Buntsandstein sediments. Despite its compact size, the reserve is ecologically rich. More than 270 vascular plant species have been recorded, including warmth-loving and light-demanding taxa, submediterranean and introduced plants, plus several Red List and legally protected species. The combination of shallow sandy soils, exposed rock faces, and a transitional climate between the humid Palatinate Forest and the dry Upper Rhine Plain produces an unusual coexistence of dry grassland, woodland, and dry scrub communities. The site is also a landscape of historical layers. The ruin of the Wolfsburg castle, first documented in 1255 and destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, sits above a bend in the Speyerbach valley, and the nineteenth-century Wolfsberg railway tunnel cuts through the slope. The area has been protected in some form since 1953, with the current ordinance dating from 1984, making it one of the older small reserves around Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
