Naturwald Wotansborn

Naturwald Wotansborn is a small protected woodland in the northern Steigerwald in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Covering about 3.3 hectares, the reserve safeguards a roughly 170- to 200-year-old island of mature beech forest (Buchenmischwald) along with the historically captured Wotansborn spring on the Erlesbach stream. The site was designated in 2020 under Bavarian forest law as a Naturwald reserve, and it lies entirely within the Natura 2000 site "Buchenwälder und Wiesentäler des Nordsteigerwalds." Although the protected area itself is tiny in scale, it carries meaningful ecological weight as part of a larger network of near-natural forest reserves in the Steigerwald. Because the old beech stand has been left unmanaged, it has developed into a structurally rich habitat with numerous biotope trees, deadwood, and characteristic features such as hollow trunks, mossy bark on the humid side of old beeches, and specialized fungi. The reserve is a quiet example of how even very small Bavarian forest reserves can preserve forest development phases that have largely disappeared from commercially managed woodlands. Wotansborn sits in the broader landscape between the town of Fabrikschleichach and the larger Naturwald Knetzberge-Böhlgrund, near the Naturschutzgebiet Weilersbachtal and the famous Naturwald Kleinengelein, home to some of Germany's oldest beeches. Visitors encounter a compact but ecologically intense beech forest island, a historic spring captured in 1912, and a stream that supports a noteworthy amphibian community including fire salamanders.
