Compare protected geography around a rugged Caithness headland

Trace nearby protected landscapes from Noss Head across Highland's cliffed Caithness coast

Use Noss Head’s exposed Caithness promontory, cliff line, sea-cut geos, stacks, rocky shore, deepening water, offshore sediment, and horse mussel bed as the coastal anchor. Nearby records are compared by calculated separation and direction while retaining their designation, country context, mapped location, and marine or terrestrial characteristics.

Noss Head

Noss Head is a rocky headland on the far north coast of Scotland, overlooking Sinclairs Bay in the historic county of Caithness. It sits around five kilometres north-east of the town of Wick and marks one of the most prominent stretches of cliff coastline in the region. Beyond its dramatic shore scenery, Noss Head is best known as the centre of a Marine Protected Area established in 2014 by the Scottish Government. The surrounding sea floor supports the largest known bed of horse mussels in Scottish waters, along with a wider community of cold-water marine life that has made the site ecologically important at the national level. The headland has a long human history. It was recorded as Verubium Promontorium by the Greek geographer Ptolemy in the second century AD, and in the nineteenth century it became the site of Noss Head Lighthouse, an early example of an innovative diagonally paned lantern design.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
