Prespa National Park

Prespa National Park lies in the Western Macedonia region of northern Greece, encircling the Greek portion of the Prespa lake system, including the southeastern shore of the larger lake and the entirety of Small Prespa Lake. The protected area covers roughly 32,700 hectares of wetland, woodland, and upland habitats at the tri-border meeting point of Greece, North Macedonia, and Albania. The park's defining identity is its wetlands. The shallow lakes, reed beds, and surrounding floodplains are recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance and rank among the most important bird habitats in southeastern Europe. Mixed broadleaf forests and meadows rise above the lake basins, supporting a biodiversity profile that is unusually rich for its small footprint. Although Greece has several larger and better-known parks, Prespa stands out for its concentration of rare wetland species, its ecological connection to the wider transboundary Prespa basin, and its role in the survival of vulnerable pelican populations. It is a quiet, lake-focused park whose significance far exceeds its modest visitor profile.
