Réserve naturelle régionale des monts de Baives

The Réserve naturelle régionale des monts de Baives is a small regional nature reserve located in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, within the commune of Baives and the broader Parc naturel régional de l'Avesnois. Occupying roughly 19 hectares on the southern flank of the Calestienne geological structure, the reserve protects a rare mosaic of calcareous habitats at the interface of continental and pseudo-Mediterranean climatic influences. It is renowned among botanists for its species-rich thermophilous grasslands on hard limestone, an extraordinary feature so far north in France that the site marks biogeographic limits for several species. The reserve is also valued for its mosaic of calcicole woodland, pine stands, mesotrophic edges, an old quarry that shelters bat colonies, and a small historical chapel that adds a cultural dimension to the natural setting. Classified in its current form in 2009, the Monts de Baives has its roots in an earlier voluntary nature reserve designation from 1986. It is jointly managed by the Avesnois Regional Nature Park and the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels of Hauts-de-France, and it plays a recognised role in regional ecological connectivity.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
