Réserve naturelle régionale du marais de la Vacherie

The Réserve naturelle régionale du marais de la Vacherie is a small regional nature reserve in the Pays de la Loire region of western France. It lies within the Marais poitevin, a vast coastal wetland complex on the Atlantic seaboard, and protects a network of natural wet meadows near the Baie de l'Aiguillon in the southern Vendée department. The reserve is recognized for its habitat mosaic shaped by subtle microtopography, with low winter-flooded depressions, intermediate slopes, and slightly higher dry ground each supporting different plant communities. It is a refuge for wetland birds, especially breeding and migratory waders, waterfowl, and terns, as well as for mammals such as the European otter and several bats. Managed by the Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux (LPO), the reserve represents an important fragment of an older, traditional agricultural marsh landscape that has been progressively drained and converted elsewhere in the region. Its protection helps maintain the ecological character of the back-marsh zone that links the Marais poitevin to the estuary of the Baie de l'Aiguillon.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
