Rezerwat przyrody Mogielica

Rezerwat przyrody Mogielica is a small but ecologically important Polish nature reserve located on the summit and northern slopes of Mogielica, the highest peak of the Beskid Wyspowy range in southern Poland. Sitting at roughly 1170 meters in the Lesser Polish voivodeship, the reserve protects one of the few remaining high-elevation mixed and coniferous forest stands in this part of the Carpathians, along with the rocky and tectonically sculpted landforms around the summit. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the habitat of the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), one of the most threatened and charismatic forest grouse species in Europe, together with other rare boreal birds that still breed in the upper forest zones of the Gorce area. Beyond its capercaillie focus, the reserve also shelters a natural patch of upper-mountain spruce forest, beech and fir woodlands lower down, and a wider forest landscape that supports wolves, lynx, and occasionally brown bears. Established in 2011 after years of effort by local ecologists, the reserve is classified administratively as both a faunistic reserve and a biocenotic and physiocenotic reserve, reflecting the combined protection of animal life, natural forest communities, and erosional rock formations. It is managed under the supervision of the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Kraków, with Limanowa Forest District responsible for the surrounding forest estate. The reserve was created in direct response to a proposed ski development on the northern slopes of Mogielica, and its existence represents a successful compromise between conservation and local municipal interests, although conservationists continue to argue that its boundary should be enlarged and integrated into the broader Natura 2000 network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
