Richland Creek Wilderness

Richland Creek Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in the Ozark region of northern Arkansas, contained within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest and managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Created by Congress in 1984, the wilderness covers just under 12,000 acres of rugged terrain shaped by the clear waters of Richland Creek and Long Devil's Fork Creek, both framed by steep sandstone bluffs characteristic of the Ozark landscape. The area is largely forested with second- and third-growth oak-hickory woodland, interrupted by scattered stands of shortleaf pine. Because it is a designated U.S. Wilderness Area, motorized and mechanized use is prohibited, logging and mining are banned, and the landscape retains a largely undisturbed, trail-only character that has earned the area a reputation as an infrequently visited backcountry destination. Richland Creek Wilderness represents a small but ecologically meaningful slice of the public Ozark wilderness system, offering a protected refuge for native wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey within easy reach of the Arkansas River Valley.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
