Rideau Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Rideau Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a Canadian federal bird sanctuary on the Rideau River in eastern Ontario. Established in 1957 and administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service, it protects a roughly 5.6 km stretch of river along with adjoining lands near the village of Merrickville, about 55 km south-southwest of Ottawa. Its primary purpose is to safeguard habitat used by migratory waterfowl, especially during the autumn staging season. The protected river section overlaps with both the Rideau Canal, a National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Rideau River, designated as a Canadian Heritage River, giving the sanctuary a distinctive cultural and natural setting. Although compact at about 7.5 square kilometres, the sanctuary concentrates protection on a key wildlife corridor of regional importance. Its value lies less in scale than in its role as a seasonal refuge within a corridor that connects Ottawa to the broader St. Lawrence watershed.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
