In 1952, a larger head regulator was built to divert water to the Bist Doab Canal, the Sirhind Canal, and the Bhakra Main Canal upstream of the wetland, supporting irrigation, industry, and domestic use.
The area surrounding the wetland has a much older history. Rupnagar, adjacent to the wetland, contains a 21-meter-high ancient mound known as Nalagarh Tibbi, which overlays Shiwalik deposition on the left bank of the Sutlej. Archaeological excavations here have revealed a sequence of six cultural phases spanning from Harappan times to the present, indicating continuous habitation.
