Ramsar-listed freshwater wetland at the Himalayan foothills of Punjab, India

Ropar Wetland

Ropar Wetland, also referred to as Ropar Lake, is a man-made freshwater riverine and lacustrine wetland in the northern Indian state of Punjab. The wetland sits in the Shivalik foothills of the lower Himalayas and was created in 1952 on the Sutlej River through the construction of a head regulator designed to store and divert water for irrigation, drinking water supply, and industrial use. The site is recognized internationally as a Ramsar wetland of importance, designated in January 2002 for its role in conserving biological diversity and sustaining ecological and hydrological functions. The wetland supports a wide range of life, including mammals, migratory and resident birds, fish, arthropods, rotifers, crustaceans, and protozoans, giving it a notably diverse biological character. Beyond its ecological value, the wetland also carries deep historical layers around it. The nearby Rupnagar area contains archaeological remains linking it to the Harappan civilization, while the Sutlej riverbank nearby marks the site of the 1831 Anglo-Sikh meeting between Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Lord William Bentinck. These overlapping ecological, cultural, and hydrological roles make Ropar Wetland a distinctive protected landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
