Southern California's vast mountain forest across four major ranges.

San Bernardino National Forest

San Bernardino National Forest is a large federally protected mountain forest in Southern California, spanning more than 820,000 acres across San Bernardino and Riverside counties. It covers four major mountain ranges: the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains, part of the Transverse Ranges, and the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains, part of the northern Peninsular Ranges. Elevations rise dramatically from about 2,000 feet in the lower foothills to more than 11,400 feet at the highest peaks, creating a steep gradient of vegetation zones, from dry chaparral and oak woodlands to dense mixed conifer forests and high-elevation pine stands. The forest contains seven designated wilderness areas, several of Southern California's highest waterfalls, and a network of mountain communities and recreation sites. Headquartered in the city of San Bernardino and managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the forest plays a central role in protecting watersheds, providing outdoor recreation, and framing the wild backdrop that defines much of inland Southern California.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
