Armenia's high-altitude gem protecting Lake Sevan and its remarkable biodiversity

Sevan National Park

Sevan National Park is one of Armenia's four protected national parks, established in 1978 to safeguard Lake Sevan—a high-altitude freshwater lake of exceptional ecological and cultural significance. Located in the Gegharkunik Province of eastern Armenia, the park encompasses the lake and its surrounding landscapes at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the South Caucasus and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, holding about 33 cubic kilometers of water across its 1,238 square kilometer surface. The park's mission centers on protecting this unique aquatic ecosystem, the surrounding wetlands, forests, and steppe habitats, while also supporting sustainable use of natural resources. The park operates under the Armenian Ministry of Environment and maintains a research center that monitors ecological conditions and implements conservation measures throughout the protected area.
