Shei-Pa National Park

Shei-Pa National Park is a protected area in central Taiwan encompassing the rugged highland regions around the Xueshan Range, one of the island's most significant mountain systems. Established on July 1, 1992, the park spans approximately 768.5 square kilometers across Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, and Taichung City, protecting a dramatic altitudinal gradient from 760 meters in the Da-an River Valley to 3,886 meters at the summit of Xueshan, Taiwan's second-highest mountain. The park cradles the headwaters of several major river systems that supply freshwater to northern and western Taiwan, making it a critical watershed area. Its geological character includes notable features such as the box fold of Pintian Mountain and numerous glacial cirques left from past ice ages. The protected area supports rich forest diversity and was the site where researchers documented a 79.1-meter-tall Taiwania tree in 2022, among hundreds of exceptionally tall trees growing in its mountain forests.
