Sheyenne National Grassland

Sheyenne National Grassland is a federally protected National Grassland located in southeastern North Dakota, United States. Established to preserve a distinctive ribbon of tallgrass prairie habitat, it sits in a belt of sandy soils along the Sheyenne River, spanning Ransom and Richland Counties. It is the only National Grassland in the United States that lies within the tallgrass prairie ecosystem type, making it an ecologically unique element of the country's protected area network. The landscape mixes native prairie remnants with oak savanna, sand dunes, and river-bottom woodlands. This unusual ecological blend supports one of North Dakota's largest populations of greater prairie chickens, along with rare prairie-dependent species such as the Dakota skipper butterfly and the western prairie fringed orchid. The grassland is administered by the U.S. Forest Service and continues to support traditional ranching alongside conservation, with roughly 83 cattle ranchers grazing livestock on its land. Visitors come primarily for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking along a 31-mile stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail that passes east to west through the grassland. The area offers wide-open prairie scenery, a quiet rural atmosphere, and a sense of undisturbed Midwestern grasslands that have all but vanished elsewhere in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
