Sichuan Yading National Nature Reserve

Sichuan Yading National Nature Reserve is a large protected natural area in the far western part of Sichuan Province, China, administered from Daocheng County within the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The reserve sits at the headwaters of the Litang River in a region of towering peaks, glaciated valleys, alpine meadows, and clear mountain lakes. The defining feature of the region is a tight cluster of three snow-clad mountains arranged in a triangular pattern that locals refer to as the Three Holy Mountains of Yading: Chenresig (Xiannairi), Jampalyang (Yangmaiyong), and Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji). Each peak carries deep religious meaning in Tibetan Buddhism, representing compassion, wisdom, and courage respectively, and the surrounding landscape includes high-altitude lakes, glacial cirques, and open pastures that have long shaped both spiritual and ecological identity in the area. Beyond its cultural weight, the reserve is recognized as a nationally protected area and a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme site. Its mix of high-altitude ecosystems, dramatic vertical relief, and relatively intact alpine environments gives it a distinctive profile among China's nature reserves and makes it one of the most emblematic high-mountain protected landscapes in the eastern Tibetan Plateau foothills.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
