Siete Luminarias

Siete Luminarias is a group of seven extinct volcanoes located in central Mexico, centered on and around the town of Valle de Santiago in the state of Guanajuato. The volcanoes are low-rimmed maars, each marked by a steep-walled, flat-bottomed crater that can reach up to one kilometer across. Together they form one of the most distinctive concentrations of phreatomagmatic volcanic landforms within the broader Michoacán–Guanajuato volcanic field. The site sits in the Bajío, a fertile agricultural lowland on the southwestern edge of the Mexican Plateau. Four of the craters once held crater lakes, though groundwater over-extraction has since left them dry. In 1997, the area was declared a natural monument by the Mexican government, giving the volcanic cluster formal protection and a defined area of roughly eighty-nine square kilometers. Siete Luminarias is significant both as a geological landmark and as a cultural reference point in Guanajuato. The "seven luminaries" name reflects the way the craters were traditionally imagined as lights or beacons in the surrounding landscape, and they remain an important regional symbol of Valle de Santiago's identity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
