Sylter Außenriff, Östliche Deutsche Bucht

Sylter Außenriff – Östliche Deutsche Bucht is a large offshore nature reserve in the southeastern North Sea, located within Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone and adjacent to the country's continental shelf. Designated by ordinance on 28 September 2017, the protected area combines the Fauna-Flora-Habitat site Sylter Außenriff and the Bird Special Protection Area Östliche Deutsche Bucht, forming part of the broader European Natura 2000 ecological network. The reserve encompasses roughly 5,600 square kilometers of open sea west of the North Frisian coast, covering the outer grounds offshore of the islands of Sylt and Amrum and extending over the moraine ridges of the northeastern flank of the Elbe glacial valley. Its underwater landscape is shaped by shallow sandbanks and unusually extensive stone reefs for the German Bight, while the wider waters serve as a critically important resting, feeding, and wintering zone for seabirds across the North Sea flyway. Marine mammals also rely heavily on the reserve. The area holds the highest density of harbor porpoises anywhere in the North Sea and is significant for grey seals and harbor seals. Several existing and planned offshore wind farms, including Butendiek, DanTysk, and Amrumbank West, are located within or directly adjacent to the protected area, making it a focal point of marine spatial planning and conservation management in German waters.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
