Covering about 299 hectares, the area protects a mosaic of wetlands, aspen parkland groves, and native grass prairie. These habitats support breeding and migratory waterfowl, songbirds, and a range of mammals typical of the Saskatchewan boreal-prairie transition zone. Although small in size, the reserve carries outsized ecological weight as one of the successor units of the former Prairie National Wildlife Area, reconstituted in 2025 to better reflect modern conservation criteria.
